Flying High in Goring By Sea!
Date Published
07 July 2025
One of the great things about living in and around West Worthing is the miles of coastline that runs through to Ferring. Typical shingle pebbles interspersed with wooden groynes, along with wide stretches of sand exposed at high tide, it all comes together to make a pristine example of a classic West Sussex beach.
Popular with dog walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking for a relaxing experience at any time of the year, there's also another aspect of Goring beach that may come as a surprise - it's an extremely popular windsurfing location!
Picture the scene
The layout of the area is well suited for watersports because just back from the beach is a path lined with traditional wooden beach huts, so there's an element of seclusion. Then there's a large wide grassy area before you get to the road, so it's a very different scenario from central Worthing where you will find a more traditional British seaside promenade.
Here in Goring instead of amusement arcades or beaches crowded with holiday makers it's more likely that you'll find fishing boats with fresh for sale and windsurfers!
From the beach it's only a short walk to reach the laid back feel of Goring town centre with its selection of shops and cafes, although the famous Sea Lanes cafe is right on the beach so you don't really need to look elsewhere.
Sea breeze
It's not so much that it's particularly windy here at any given time of the year, it's more that the sea breeze is just right for creating the conditions for safe windsurfing.
At the Goring end of this long beach there's a car park next to the
Sailing Club
, which is the focus of activity.
Windsurf Magazine
notes that the ideal winds are east through the south to west and conditions range from those suitable for newcomers right through to those challenging enough for professionals.
A very gentle sloping seabed means that launching or landing at low tide can involve a long walk across a patchwork of rocks and sand, so a spare fin can come in handy for the shallow conditions after reaching the water – a potential fin wrecking experience!
At high tide the slope compliments sailing as the least choppiest water in the area is to be found here, according to the magazine.
Perfect place
Kitesurfing is restricted to clearly marked zones around Worthing and the large grassy area at Goring beach is perfect for setting-up and launching. These are only two of the reasons the sport has made such a home here, because intermediates and above, flat water cruisers, wingfoilers, kite loopers and wave riders can all find conditions suited to their preferences.
It's a popular pastime with locals too, as there's no noise pollution or exhaust fume by-product of this graceful pastime. In fact, watching the colourful spectacle can make for a relaxing and enjoyable time for anyone.
